TEHRAN –- Former foreign minister Kamal Kharrazi said on Friday that Iran never intends to withdraw from the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), but it will adopt appropriate stance toward any resolution.

A draft resolution drawn up by Britain, France and Germany demands certain sanctions on Iran for its nuclear enrichment program.

“Iran opposes proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, therefore it will never pull out of the NPT,” Kharrazi, the chairman of the Strategic Council for Foreign Relations, told reporters.

He described the European draft resolution as illegal and unjustified, saying, “We expect countries like Russia and China to fulfill their responsibilities as the two permanent members of the UN Security Council and prevent such resolutions from being issued,” he added.

Veto-wielding Russia has proposed major deletions to the draft, including eliminating an assets freeze and a travel ban.

Russia and China know that the adoption of such resolutions not only will not resolve the issue, but it will create more crises in the Middle East region, the former minister noted.

The best solution to allay international concerns about the Islamic Republic’s nuclear activities is negotiation without precondition, the said. “Tehran has announced it is ready to hold talks, but we will not accept unfair preconditions.”

“Iran will continue its activities and will insist on its inalienable rights without paying attention to what others do,” Kharrazi vowed.
